Whenever i am approached as a leader and asked by someone what they should do. I ask them ‘what do you think you should do?’. They stop and think and come up with a solution that is much better than anything i could have suggested. So i say, ‘do that then.’ They do it and it goes perfectly well. This is a style of leadership that i developed when directing amateur plays. ‘How should i play this scene?’ ….’how do you think?You’ve read the scene?’ ‘. Pause…solution…’Do that then.’ If they come up with an inappropriate solution or they genuinely don’t know. I will come up with something. But i am certain that this is the second best option. People who work with me are encouraged to be leaders and to become leaders. When department heads take their responsibilities. I enrole them in the overall leadership philosophy of empowerment. ‘Empower your staff whenever you are able to do so.’ It is important to know what they are doing. Because even if you delegate a job to someone. As a leader you can never delegate the responsibility…you are always responsible.
