The power of listening.

The power of listening.

Several years ago I was chatting with a businessman about coaching. He was fairly dismissive but was open-minded enough to give things a go. ‘So what do you do? What is this coaching?’ I explained that the first step is listening. Not just any listening but reflective listening. With curiosity and without judgement. Being aware of body language and process analysis really help a client open up. Creating a space where what is important is what the client thinks, feels or does. Using intuition but not assuming it is correct unless it has been presented for confirmation. We engaged in this for about an hour. This guy wanted to talk. And more to the point desperately wanted to be listened to, or more to the point to be heard. What was the result? Well, our sceptical friend said, ‘wow, is that what you do?’ ‘That was amazing.’ ‘I feel 100 kg lighter’ ‘I would gladly pay $100 an hour for that.’
